Having worked at Carrot Recruitment for over a decade, Chris Newall has accumulated an in-depth knowledge of the Market Research job market. We caught up with him to find out what drives him, what advice he has for job seekers in Market Research, and how he supports his candidates.

What do you enjoy most about recruiting within Market Research?

I love working in an industry that’s constantly growing; my desk never slows down! The Market Research sector is always evolving, and that is reflected in the vacancies I recruit for. For instance, I recently recruited for an agency that is developing research techniques within Artificial Intelligence. And one candidate I interviewed had developed an app that can be used to detect if someone has covid just by listening to their cough!

Working within this sector for the last 11 years has also put me in a unique position whereby I am able to see candidates who I originally placed in entry-level roles are now leading teams in senior leadership roles - that is a very fulfilling feeling.

Have you noticed any changes in recruitment trends post-pandemic?

Companies within my sector have not only got back to business as usual, but they are releasing more job opportunities than ever. So, this is a great time for Market Research professionals to pursue new job opportunities. There’s also change in the interview format post-covid – I'm seeing a lot more interviews being carried out remotely, making it easier for both candidates and clients to fit them in their busy schedules.

What would you say to a job seeker looking to start a career in Market Research?

A career in Market Research offers a variety of progression opportunities and the ability to multitask is essential as you’ll be working on various projects at once. You can also expect to be exposed to a range of therapy areas as well as discussing sensitive subjects with patients and doctors.

A career in Market Research is highly rewarding and offers many development opportunities, great salary packages and even the chance to travel!

Why should candidates use your services to find a new job – how do you support them?

I support my candidates through every stage of the hiring process. I usually start with a thorough discussion with them to find out their current situation and exactly what they’re looking for; this helps me match them with the vacancies that will really interest them. Then I fully brief them on these roles.

I have long-standing working relationships with my clients, so I know their recruitment process very well and understand what unique selling points they each have. This is how I’m able to provide my candidates with everything they need to know about the role, the employer, and each stage of the interview process. On top of that, I also offer to review their materials, so they feel well-prepared for the interview.

How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and occurrences in Market Research?

I speak to professionals in the industry every day – this includes clients and candidates across all levels. This allows me to stay current on any news, trends, and the job market in the sector.

Can you share some recent feedback you’ve received from a candidate you’ve worked with?

"Working with Chris was fantastic, and I got a great offer much faster than I expected. I was initially just getting in touch to explore options and was unsure about what was available, having been out of the Pharma sector for a few years, whilst also looking for a remote working role. Chris encouraged me to have initial discussions with a range of companies which helped to build confidence and give me an idea of the opportunities available. I would definitely recommend him!
